Drove to Rochester last night with the new mag mount antenna hooked up to my TH-78A. It performed much better than anticipated.
While I didn't get any contacts on the way over, I did grab two on the way back on the 146.73 repeater. The first was with KD0DTU about 20 to 25 miles out of town. Came through quite well for the distance using a whip and 5 watts.
A little closer to town I picked up KB0ZBU. We chatted the rest of the way home.
I'd say that this bodes well for when I install the FT-7800R in the car. Imagine how 50 watts will perform.

New Toys
Well, I'm back from Radio City with two new radios.
I picked up a Vertex (Yaesu) VX-150 2 meter handheld, and a Yaesu FT-7800R Dualband Mobile. I had planned on picking up the FT-2800M or FT-1802M 2 meter radio, but when I saw the 7800 on consignment for not much more than the 2 meter only radios, the choice was easy. Unfortunately, I think there is a loose wire in the 7800s mic which causes it to short out occasionally. I'll have to take it to work and see if Karl (WA0RLY) fan figure out what's wrong with it.
For power I picked up a SamlexAmerica SEC-1223 power supply for the TS-440S and the FT-7800R (if I don't put it in my car right away). Now I can return the power supply I borrowed from John (KB0SPM). This one should give my HT a bit more punch too.
Also among my purchases was an MFJ-1722 Ultralight 144/440 MHz dualband magmount antenna, SMA-to-BNC connector, DC cable for the 7800R, and a couple books.
Looks like I've got quite a bit of reading material to go through for the next few weeks.

Heading to Radio City
I'm planning on heading to Radio City tomorrow to buy a 2 Meter mobile rig, car mount antenna, power supply, books, and maybe a few other things.
Best part; tomorrow is their "Tax Free" sale. Not really tax free, but they give you store credit matching the tax on what you buy.

Study Period
I really should find time to start studying for my General License. I think it would be great if I could get upgraded by the end of April.
I also should think about saving money for a UHF/VHF rig. Not sure if I want a base station or a mobile unit for the car, or which brand to go for, but there are plenty of people in the local clubs I could ask for opinions. Then I'll also have to get an antenna put on the roof of the building so I can put my rigs to good use.
